What Autumn Asks Us to Release

Autumn arrives each year with a natural rhythm of change.

In Chinese medicine, Autumn connects with the lungs and large intestine, traditionally associated with letting go and release.

A tree rests through the seasons until it’s ready. Some years bring no fruit, but there’s still value in its shade and its growth. Some things are still ripening, some seeds haven’t yet emerged, and some trees may never produce the fruit we expected. That doesn’t mean their growth has no value. A tree can grow simply as an expression of itself, offering shade, shelter, beauty, and life without needing to prove itself through fruit.

Perhaps we can offer ourselves that kind of acceptance too. What do we resist in ourselves right now? Pressure to perform, to show up as something we don’t feel?

Simply staying present with what we’re experiencing can bring clarity. Letting go can mean settling into a calm spaciousness that lets life bloom rather than forcing it, without needing to create something new immediately.

Grounding can help us release pressure into the earth.

Mindful breathing can create space for something else to grow.

Gentle movement can help us turn inward and gather our energy.

As we prepare for the season ahead, perhaps we can also view autumn as a cycle: Harvest. Appreciate. Release. Prepare. Rest.

Letting go is a process, like a leaf slowly drifting to the ground. It arrives with effortless flow, landing safely beneath a tree.

That process may produce something new: a seed of growth, a quieter mind, or simply a return home.

What we’ve been holding onto, a worry, a sadness, a habit, may simply be asking to be set down rather than carried further.

Perhaps autumn offers us an invitation not to resist the change, but to find our balance within it.

What has ripened through our efforts, patience, and experiences? What still needs time?

Not everything bears fruit on our schedule. Some things continue growing, some need rest, and some may simply exist as an expression of themselves.
